What are the costs of a living plant wall?

A living plant wall costs an average of €500 per square meter, including plants, a watering system, and lighting. This price varies significantly depending on the type of system, the size of your wall, and whether you do the work yourself.

In this article, we explain what determines the price of a plant wall and how you can save costs without sacrificing quality.

Costs of different types of plant walls

The price of a plant wall differs per system. In our previous article on different types of plant walls, we already explained which systems exist. Here you can read what each system costs and what you should look out for.

Pocket System: €25 per m²

This seems incredibly cheap, but plants and watering are not included. You have to water it yourself every week. This system is only suitable for outdoors because the wall behind it gets damp.

Box System: €1,400 per m²

For most models, plants are not included (count on an extra €150 per m²). Often no automatic watering system either, so manual maintenance is required every week.

Artificial Plant Wall: €80 per m²

No maintenance, but also no healthy air or natural look. After all, they are plastic plants.

Felt System: €500 per m²

The water is distributed well through the felt. With this system, plants, automatic watering, and lighting are standard inclusions. You refill the water reservoir once a month. We supply this type of system because it offers a good price-quality ratio.

Be careful when comparing: Always ask if plants, watering, and lighting are included. Otherwise, you will end up paying more than you think.

What are the costs of an all-in-one plant wall package?

We supply the complete package. This contains everything you need to start immediately. Below you can see the costs per component for a standard model of almost 2m²:

Vertical garden system – €322

 Plants – €480

 Lighting – €120

 Plant food & healthy fungi – €35

Total: €957

What does it cost to install a plant wall?

The installation of a standard model costs €480. This is the price for 1 module of 90cm wide and 240cm high.

If you have two modules next to each other? Then the installation costs double.

You can also install the plant wall yourself. The system is based on the IKEA-concept: easy to assemble.

Maintenance and lifespan: how to get the most out of your plant wall?

A plant wall with automatic watering costs almost nothing to maintain. Here are the costs at a glance:

Costs of nutrients

Your plants need nutrition to stay healthy. Count on approximately €30 per year for a standard model of almost 2m²

Costs of electricity

The LED lighting costs €15 in electricity per year. The water pump uses almost no power, about €0.30 per year. We assume a price of €0.25 per kWh.

A plant wall therefore costs around €15 per year in electricity.

Time costs

Filling the water reservoir once a month takes 5 minutes. Pruning twice a year takes fifteen minutes. This amounts to approximately 2 hours of maintenance per year. For nearly 100 plants!

The total costs of a plant wall per year are €35,- and 2 hours of time.

This is little compared to 100 plants that you water weekly yourself.

What does it cost to make a plant wall yourself (DIY)?

The total costs for making a plant wall yourself are approximately €540,-. This is a plant wall of 1 meter wide and 2 meters high. Below is an estimate of all material costs:

 PVC sheet (1x2 meters) – €50
 Felt – €20
 Plants – €300
Pump, timer, drippers, and mounting material – €100
 Lighting – €50
 Water reservoir – €20

Total: €540

Next year we will release a complete course on making a plant wall yourself. This has already been recorded and is full of practical tips.

What do you need to take into account when installing a plant wall?

  • No water connection required: The water reservoir stands on the ground. You fill it manually. So you do not need a water connection.
  • Electrical outlet is required: You need power for the lighting and water pump. Make sure there is an electrical outlet nearby.
  • Not too cold: Houseplants do not like cold. Do not place your plant wall in a place where the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit).
  • Not in direct sunlight: Too much sun burns the leaves. Choose a spot with indirect light or use the included lighting.
